I’ll be presenting a paper titled “Prince and the Event” at the Prince from Minneapolis conference this week. If you happen to be there, I hope we run into each other. Look me up on Twitter.
My talk builds off of the chapter about Prince in Nothing Has Been Done Before but takes a little closer look at why his music from the 1980s constituted an event. Presentations are short (10-12 minutes!) so there’s only so much detail I can get into. I’m looking forward to the panels Monday through Wednesday, especially the plenaries featuring some of Prince’s collaborators.
This is my third conference this spring, and they’ve regressed in terms of temperatures: Los Angeles, Nashville, and now Minneapolis, which has been besieged by snow. Fittingly, “Sometimes It Snows in April” is one of my favorite Prince songs.
